Motivation to start your week off on the right foot. We all need a little extra motivation, especially me, so let’s get motivated together!
This week, let’s focus on decluttering your closet!
Decluttering your closet. YIKES, this is a topic I will never claim to be good at. I frequently search on Pinterest to find different hacks to cleaning. They all make it seem so easy. I feel like 90% of us hate cleaning and seeing someone on Pinterest make it look so easy just makes me mad. I know I’m not alone in this matter, so while I’m cussing out my closet, I thought I would share the experience and hopefully help us all get on track this new year!
Let’s just jump right in to Decluttering Your Closet, for people who hate cleaning:
- Mentally prepare yourself. No, I’m not kidding. Blast some Spice Girls, or whatever your feel good music is, and get in the right head space. You can do this.
- Get two boxes (to start with). One for donating and one for garbage. While we are on the topic, pick out a good donation place – NOT Goodwill. I typically drop my things off at a Women’s Shelter, or a little shop in my town that is free for low income women and children to “shop” at. Having a good place to donate your clothing to makes the whole process much more upbeat and positive.
- Pull everything OUT! Seriously, get everything out so you can really dig through all of your clothing.
- Pitch it. Does it have holes, extra pilling, or wear and tear? Get rid of it, you aren’t going to fix it.
- Donate it. Have you worn it in the past 2-3 years? (Yes, that’s a long time I know, but I don’t wear all of my clothes once a year either, let’s be real). Does it still have tags on it? Is it still in style? If you answer ‘no’ to any of those – DONATE IT!
- Possibly keep. Think you’re keeping it? Try it on first! If the item is too small and you’re telling yourself you’ll get back in to this size soon, but you are still eating brownies for breakfast and not using that really expensive gym membership you have…DONATE THE CLOTHES! If you’re wearing the clothing regularly and its in good shape, then keep it. If the items are neither of those things, decide why you are hanging on to the item (sentimental value?) if it’s reasonable, then hold on to it for a bit longer.
- Sort. If you live somewhere with seasons, I recommend sorting your clothing out by seasons. Put clothes in containers in your basement or attic and switch out your closet for the seasons.
- Hang it up. Whatever you’ve decided to keep out needs a place to live in your closet. If you’re like me, you’ll still be left with a ton of clothes. My favorite trick is to hang everything up on tiered hangers for tops and pants, it’ll save you a ton of room!
I know, this isn’t an easy task. Trust me, I hate cleaning, which is why this list is so basic. Do these simple steps and we can get through cleaning the closet together!
